Unity Historical Society

Who We Are :
Membership has grown to more than 80 members today, almost half of which are Life Members. While the majority come from Unity, there are many from out of town and even out of state.

Meetings take place from April through October, but our members are active throughout the year.

Members have recently completed cataloging all seven of Unity's cemeteries--gathering and recording information on over 2,700 individual stones; indexing the Research Library; hosting events and groups, such as the annual open house and luncheon, held the weekend of Unity High School's reunion; helping area students with history research; providing tours of the building, Unity and the surrounding areas; and assisting in genealogical research.

Where It all Began :

In March 1982, a small group of people interested in preserving the history of Unity, as well as preserving its antiquities, gathered and formed the Unity Historical Society.

Within months of its creation, Dr. S. Stillman Berry, of Redlands, California, offered to purchase a permanent location for the Society. Dr. Berry was born in Unity, and moved to Montana at an early age. During his life he maintained close ties to Unity and in his later years wanted to leave something of lasting value to the town.

Originally, the building purchased for the Society was the home of Lemuel Bartlett. The building was constructed in 1813 with bricks made on-site.

What's Happening Today :

The Society continues to generate support from people in Unity as well as from outside of town. In 2002, members are involved in projects that focus on the Society and Unity, with an emphasis on community enrichment.

These projects include an historic walking tour of Unity (in concert with Unity Barn Raisers), continuing the herb garden, making cemetery data available on the web, student education as well as an informative and unique slate of monthly programs.
