Town Of Oneida

19922 Alberta Street
423-569-4295

The Town of Oneida was settled near the railroad in the early 1900s.

The town was formed in order to maintain an area of travel to and from the merchants, and the ideal spot was near the railroad where the merchandise was delivered.

The Town of Oneida passed a tariff on the railroad; each item that shipped through Oneida was taxed. The railroad got the state to remove the Town charter.

The current charter for the Town of Oneida is Private Acts 1917, Chapter 211. It is the third charter to be issued by the state.

The railroad still runs through Oneida, and is the main line running North to South.

Main Street, formed near the railroad, is still in the same location today.

In the early years, the streets of Oneida were paved with bricks made in Robbins, a nearby community.

The first sidewalks in the Town of Oneida were laid in 1923.
