Houlton is known as the Shiretown, Aroostook County's seat of government.

In the early 1900's, Houlton was one of the top ten richest communities in the United States due to the forestry and agricultural economic activies. As you venture through the streets in the community the well preserved Victorian architecture of the homes and commercial buildings evidences such prosperous times of a bygone era.

Houlton's downtown Market Square contains a large collection of historic buildings and is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites.

Houlton has a population of about 6,419 and is located at the terminus of I-95 which is the major port of entry from the Maritime Canadian border into the United States.

Houlton is a Service Center Community of the Southern Aroostook County communities and provides many services such as retail shopping, business and professional services, employment opportunities, educational opportunities, social services, cultural, recreational and entertainment activities to the Citizens of Houlton and the Citizens living in the surrounding communities
