As soon as William T. Nardin was elected and took office on January 1, 1938 he urged the committee to create the police force. The committee agreed and named Nardin director of public safety. The policemen who were appointed were Chief Charles C. Garwood, Patrolmen Tony Panarello, Thomas Perllingiero. Frank L. Thompson was named as a reserve patrolman to be placed on call.

After seven months of duty, the township committee voted to eliminate the police force by a vote of 2 to 1 with Nardin being the only supporter. A full-time Police Force was reformed in 1956 by Township Resolution. Three officers were hired and vehicles were purchased. The police headquarters was located in the residence of Chief T.P. Panarello. It was then stationed at the Old Town Hall and remained there until the municipal center was completed.

By 1970 the Police Force had grown from three members to 13 including one Lieutenant, two Sergeants, One Detective, nine patrolmen and four civilian dispatchers. The Township also had six police vehicles allowing for a patrol car to be assigned to a specific area for patrol.
