History

The Melrose School was chartered in the late 1800's in the early years of the town of Melrose. The original school building housed all grades, 1st through 12th, in one building and was located in the vicinity of Betty's Pizza.

Moving to it's current campus, the "L-shaped" main building was constructed in the 1920's. Additional buildings were included as growth needs required. In addition to classrooms, the High School boasted an auditorium, an Ag-Center, a Science Lab, Home Economics Center, and lighted playing fields. As the school grew, the cafeteria and administration offices were shifted to a variety of locations as did the front entrance of the school as well.

The last graduating class of Melrose High School was in 1968. The MHS Alumni hold an annual reunion on the third Saturday of March. Area high school students now attend Interlachen High School and middle school students now attend Q. I. Roberts Middle School

Melrose Elementary school now serves nearly 400 students in the Melrose area. With the opening of the 2004-05 school, MES celebrated the addition of a new building, including administrative suites, general office area AND a new media center.

In the early 1900's area residents saw the need for the addition of gymnasium to the Melrose School campus. Using boards, poles and timbers from the original 1880's schoolhouse building, students and community members volunteered their efforts to construct the gym.

Pat Dougherty, retired MES teacher and MHS graduate, remarks that her mother and her fellow classmates recalled spending their Physical Education class periods "pulling nails" from the old boards so that they could be used in the construction of the new gymnasium.

After extensive remodeling in 2002, the gym is a beautiful building blending the old open rafters of the original construction with the updated basketball court including plexi-glass goals, high-gloss court finish, and air-conditioning! The gym is happily used by the students of MES in their daily physical education classes and the community through MYSA Basketball.
