History :

The community of Lukfata was originally established by the Federal Government as a supply depot for the Indians who settled in the extreme parts of McCurtain County in Southeast Oklahoma. Lukfata is a Choctaw word meaning white clay.

The first school was established in 1833 by Rev. Loring Williams as a Choctaw Presbyterian Missionary School. Choctaw Indian children were provided with free education. White children were allowed to attend, but were required to pay tuition.

The original Lukfata Public School District was organized and laid out by P. K. Faison, County Superintendent, on Dec. 19, 1907. The first school board members were Tom Wingfield - Clerk, J. A. Spencer - Treasurer, and J. W. Costilow - Director.

Lukfata School has undergone phenomenal changes over the years. Building expansion has recently been completed and we now have new administrative offices, new classrooms, a new gym corridor and concessions, and extended gym seating. Our facilities accommodate enrollment of approximately 300 students and a staff of 45. Our school serves grades Pre-K through 8th. Upon graduation from 8th grade, students advance to Broken Bow High School.

Lukfata School continuously strives to instill in its students the education and character traits that will lay the foundation for them to become responsible, productive, and valuable citizens of the community.
