Our Mission and Roles
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization encouraging informed and active participation in government. It influences public policy through education and advocacy. We never support or oppose any political party or candidate.

The League of Women Voters was founded in 1920 by participants in the suffragette movement who believed that victory in the voting rights battle was only a step toward a greater challenge. Said founder Carrie Chapman Catt: "Winning the vote is only an opening wedge -- learning to use it is a bigger task."

For 90 years, the League of Women voters has been dedicated to helping people learn to make effective use of their right and responsibility to vote. Originally, only women could join the League; but in 1973 the charter was modified to include men. Today, this unique, non-partisan, grassroots organization has grown exponentially and now numbers some 160,000 members, organized into chapters in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The Alexandria League of Women Voters was founded in 1947.Any citizen, 18 years of age or older, who lives in Alexandria may join. Our focus on the issues and on encouraging true government of the people has earned the League of Women Voters its reputation as one of America's most respected political institutions. In an era of proliferating and powerful special interests, the League's advocacy of the public interest is increasingly recognized as an essential voice of democracy.
