History:
Coweta derived its name from a Creek Indian war town on the Chattahoochee River in SW Georgia, and it was first settled by Native Americans around 1840.In 1843, white missionaries arrived in the area and changed the spelling of the town to Koweta.

Location:
Coweta is located in NW Wagoner County and is approximately 30 minutes from Tulsa and Muskogee, two of the largest cities in Oklahoma. Broken Arrow and Wagoner, the county seat, both neighbor to Coweta as well.

Size:
Coweta is one of the fastest growing cities in Oklahoma. Currently, Coweta is the 50th largest city in the state with a population of about 8500. Furthermore, Wagoner County is Oklahoma seventh largest county.

Access:
Access to Coweta is provided primarily by Highway 51,a 5-laned roadway which connects to the heavily- traveled Broken Arrow Expressway, six miles to the north of Coweta and to the Muskogee Turnpike 3 miles to the east. Other major roads include Highway 72, Highway 51-B, 141st St. South, and Ben Lumpkin Road.
