About Us:

The Commerce Public Library is owned and operated by the Friends of the Commerce Public Library, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization founded April of 1954 to support and promote the Library.

The Library was opened on October 12, 1954 in a small city-owned building at 1903 Park Street. On March 25, 1972 the City of Commerce was given a deed to the former post office building at 1210 Park Street to be used as a public library and, after renovations, the Library moved into its new quarters in March 1973. In 1980, the City Council passed Resolution 356 to provide maintenance and repairs for the building and grounds.

In 1991 the Texas Historical Commission granted historical site status to the Library building and it received an historical marker.

All patrons are invited to become FRIENDS OF THE COMMERCE PUBLIC LIBRARY. Annual tax-deductible membership dues, along with other memorials, honorariums, club and individual donations, provide support for the Commerce Public Library. Funding is also furnished in part by the City of Commerce, Hunt County, and United Way of Commerce.

The Library's holdings include more than 30,000 book titles, 1000 videos and DVDs, 1000 audiobooks on cassette and CD, eleven public Internet access workstation, a unique local history and genealogy collection, and the special Claire Lee Chennault Collection.
