City Of Simonton

35011-FM 1093
281-533-9809

Brief History:

Located on land originally colonized by Thomas Westall as part of Stephen F. Austin's colony of Americans in Texas, the league of land was granted to Westall by the Mexican government in 1825. The city was named after James Simonton who came to Texas in 1850. The railroad was built in about 1888 and the population of Simonton increased with Simonton being one of the main water stops for the steam engines of that time.

From 1898-1909 a prison farm was located at Simonton. The prisoners cleared the surrounding land to the Brazos River and raised ribbon cane and cotton. Later potatoes and cotton became export crops and a cotton gin was located near the railroad line until the 1980's. The railroad ran West from Houston and the right -of -way now belongs to the City of Houston Metro system.

Simonton is located in Fort Bend County, which is one of the fastest growing counties in the United States. Most of its residents work in Houston, Katy or Richmond-Rosenberg.
