We're surrounded by Newton Hills State Park, Big Sioux River, and the rolling hills of the Sioux Valley. Canton is a great place to come and spend time. Our communities welcoming atmosphere and our rich Norwegian history, which began some 130 years ago, will make you feel at home. Our community has a population of approximately 3,100. The citizens have access to affordable homes, one of the finest education systems in the state, full service hospital, the top five industries in the county, five parks, and several churches of varying denominations. The cost of living in Canton is very affordable. Homes range from $50,000 to $135,000 on average. New housing is in the process of being developed around the city including northeast of the city. We also offer one of the lowest property taxes in the state, this makes living in Canton a great value. Canton is also the county seat of Lincoln County. Because of our city's awesome qualities we have been awarded the 2004 Community of the Year by the State of South Dakota.

Living in South Dakota assures you of a having a variety of weather. The average temperature in Canton; January - 22.9, April - 56.1, July - 86.2, and October - 62.1. The winter brings the opportunity for skiing, snow boarding, ice skating and ice fishing. Newton Hills State Park's Lake Lakota, Big Sioux River, and Lake Alvin keep the anglers busy catching their limit year around. Newton Hills also offers camping, picnicking, as well as horseback riding, nature trails, cross country skiing throughout the park. In October comes one of the biggest outdoor events in the state, the opening of Pheasant season. Hunters from around the United States and foreign countries converge on the state to try their luck at getting their limit.
