The Maryland State Arts Council Update - November 2022

From: Maryland State Arts Council

Fall is a busy time at MSAC, but this year is no joke! We’re seeing staggering increases in grant applications across programs, highlighting the unsurprising but nonetheless impressive level of creativity alive in Maryland’s arts sector. Since the turn of the fiscal year, our staff has been working to process grant awards totaling over $24 million – and we’re just getting started.

Last month we received an astonishing 80 applications for Public Art Across Maryland planning and implementation grants totalling $1.2 million in requests. And following yesterday’s deadline, we’ll begin awarding the first $23 million in Arts Relief General Operating Support grants to arts organizations across the state. Based on the conversations I am having, I am certain that this historic investment in Maryland’s arts sector is setting the stage for sustainability and incredible things to come. I can’t wait to see!

An astounding amount of work goes into the grant review, award, and payment processes. More than I think most people would guess. I have to thank all of our panelists who review applications, providing thoughtful consideration of each request. And I want to share publicly my thanks to the incredible, hardworking team at MSAC who are processing unprecedented numbers of applications and grants. Your dedication to service is evident to me every day, and the important work you do for everyone we serve is so appreciated.

Since many of us pause to give thanks in the month of November, when you get the chance, please take a moment to show your appreciation to the MSAC team members that you work with. Onward!

Steven Skerritt-Davis, Executive Director
