A mystical slice of Americana noir, revered actor Charles Laughton’s sole directorial effort is cinema’s most eccentric rendering of the battle between good and evil. Starring a sublimely sinister Robert Mitchum as a traveling preacher, whose nefarious motives for marrying a widow, played by Shelley Winters, are uncovered by her terrified young children. Tall and handsome Reverend Harry Powell roams the countryside, preaching the gospel while leaving a trail of murdered women in his wake. Now his sights are set on the widow of his former cellmate.
